Mississippi River Streambank Stabilization

Diverse Shoreline Vegetation at Mississippi River Park (After Stabilization)

Year Completed:

2019

Major Watershed:

Mississippi River Sartell

The Stearns County Parks Department and the Stearns Conservation District worked together to restore the eroded and degraded streambank at the Stearns County Mississippi River Park. The restoration project included the construction of a Toe Wood Bench, Stream Barbs, and the establishment of native vegetation.

The diverse shoreline vegetation along the shore and within the water provides food, shelter, and migration corridors for fish and wildlife. The planted native buffer includes native grasses and wildflowers that bloom throughout the growing season as well as trees and shrubs. The flowering plants provide nectar for important pollinators and other beneficial insects. The native vegetation will provide habitat, filter out pollutants, and prevent soil erosion while allowing designated spaces for recreational activities like fishing.

Benefits:

  • Sediment reduction

  • Habitat restoration

  • Water quality

  • Property protection

Pollution Reduction Estimates:

  • Phosphorus: 75 lbs./yr

  • Sediment: 75 tons/yr

Partners on the project included Stearns County Parks, Stearns Conservation District, West Central TSA, and MN Conservation Corps.
