Wellhead Protection Plans
A Wellhead Protection Area (WHPA) is the surface and subsurface area surrounding a public water supply well or well field that supplies a public water system, through which contaminants are likely to move toward and reach the well or well field.

People in Minnesota get their drinking water from groundwater, lakes, and rivers. Wellhead Protection Plans (WHP) are developed to protect the water resources that supply their drinking water. Communities work to identify risks and prevent them from becoming a problem. Some examples of risks include unused wells, urban pollutants, agricultural nutrients, storage tanks, lawn nutrients and chemicals, hazardous waste, and uncontrolled land development.
