Bio-Retention Project at Stearns County Service Center
Year Completed:
2008
Major Watershed:
Sauk River
In 2008 Stearns County initiated the building of a new facility in Waite Park. As a part of the construction, the county recognized the importance of implementing Low Impact Development strategies. The Stearns Conservation District worked with Stearns County and their facilities manager to use alternative landscape best management practices to reduce the impact of the new building. The practices that were implemented on the site along the Sauk River are pervious pavers, raingardens, infiltration swales, native prairie plantings, shoreland restoration areas, and low mow turf.
Components:
Raingardens
Infiltration Swales
Prairie Plantings
Shoreland Buffers
Low Mow Turf
Pervious Pavers
Benefits:
Sediment Reduction
Nutrient Reduction
Natural Aesthetics
Lower Maintenance
Lower Costs
Pollution Reduction Estimates:
Sediment: 13.9 tons/yr.
Phosphorus: 20.2 lbs./yr.
Partners on this project included Stearns County, the Board of Water and Soil Resources (BWSR), and the City of Waite Park.
