Creating and maintaining pollinator habitats offers a multitude of environmental and economic benefits. Pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and birds, are essential for the reproduction of many plants, contributing to the biodiversity and health of ecosystems. By establishing areas rich in nectar and pollen, we support the populations of these crucial creatures, which in turn boosts the pollination of crops and wild plants. Additionally, pollinator habitats can beautify landscapes, provide educational opportunities, and promote environmental awareness, inspiring communities to take part in conservation efforts.
Students from the Sartell High School Sustainability Club contacted the Stearns Conservation District office for assistance in creating pollinator habitat on the Sartell High School campus. They wanted to convert areas of mowed turf and even enhance the vegetation in the stormwater ponds into pollinator habitat. With assistance from the SCD the School was able to convert and/or improve 13.5 acres of pollinator habitat.
The Sustainability Club hosted a community event on May 19th for the new pollinator planting so that residents and students could learn about the project, the benefits of pollinators, and even get their hands dirty by planting native and pollinator seedlings.
