The Stearns Conservation District hosted a From the Ground Up Soil Health Field Day on August 29th, 2024 in Sauk Centre. The field day was for landowners, farmers, and anyone who was interested in learning more about soil health. Throughout the day, attendees heard from local landowners and industry experts, and discovered practical ways to improve their soil’s health. This field day was a chance to ask questions, network with landowners, and gain valuable knowledge about soil health. There was also a cover crop demonstration plot area along with the rainfall simulator, which explored and examined infiltration rates on various soil types with different tillage techniques.
During the farmer panel, attendees heard from experienced local farmers who have transitioned from conventional to conservation practices. Our knowledgeable speakers shared their experiences and best practices. Additionally, there was also live equipment demonstrations. These included no-till drill and planter, low disturbance manure injector, strip-till unit, and vertical tillage unit. Attendees were also able to learn more about the MN Agricultural Water Quality Certification Program (MAWQCP) and the certification steps.
