General Description

A hardy, medium to tall, suckering shrub, native to prairie hillsides and woody draws. Also called Juneberry in reference to their blooming time. Fruits are highly prized for food. Selected cultivars are used in commercial production.

 

Pests

Intermittent flower or fruit loss may be caused by insects or late frosts. Amelanchier alnifolia is susceptible to cedar-apple rust.

 

Uses

Fruit is often used in pies, jam, wines, cider, beers and sugar-infused berries similar to dried cranberries used for cereals, trail mix and snack foods.
